GOLFO IN PROGRESS III

Open Call

Golfo as Musical Theater

Reception — Assimilation — Revival — Contemporary Approaches

As part of the research and artistic program “Golfo in Progress III,” organized by the Golfo Festival and the Theatre Laboratory of Drama and Speech of the Department of Theatre Studies, University of Patras, with the support of the Ioannis & Efterpi Topali Cultural Foundation, an open call for participation is addressed to students, researchers, creators, and artistic groups.

The program investigates the relationship between Spyridon Peresiadis’s Golfo and musical theater, focusing particularly on the operatic adaptation by Georgios Vitalis – Orestis Laskos (1938). It seeks to examine processes of reception, assimilation, and revival of this emblematic work within the broader context of contemporary performative practices.

Participants are invited to engage creatively with the limited surviving documentation—including the libretto, photographic material, fragmentary musical scores, and period reviews—and to propose innovative dramaturgical forms and experimental reinterpretations, rather than historically faithful reproductions.

Potential outputs may include musical theater performances, original compositions, sound installations, and audiovisual works that critically or poetically revisit the material.

The call is open to students of music, musicology, and drama, as well as to visual artists and interdisciplinary collectives interested in exploring the theme through artistic research.

The outcomes of the program will be presented in Patras, Aigio, and Athens in November 2026, within a framework that includes performances, a scholarly conference, and workshops.

Note:  The old piano, still kept at the Panellinion café in Amfissa, once accompanied performances of the theatrical heroine Golfo on its small provincial stage.
