OPEN CALL
To professional and amateur theatre companies and performing arts practitioners
EOS - THEATRE IN AKRATA: From Reading to Stage
As part of its new strand MONOLOGUING, the Golfo Festival extends an open call to professional and amateur theatre companies, actors, directors, theatre scholars, dramaturgs, musicians, dancers, performers and, more broadly, to individuals and collectives working in theatre and the performing arts.
You are invited to attend the first cycle of MONOLOGUING 2026, which will take place in Patras, at the EPIKENTRO+ theatre, on 16, 17 and 18 December 2026. Seven different plays will be presented as staged readings: a deliberately spare theatrical form in which the text remains present, the spoken word keeps its primacy, and the direction activates its theatricality with economy.
These seven presentations are not regarded as a closed, finished result. They are the first phase of an open creative process.
Those who attend the presentations and recognise in one or more of the plays material that concerns, challenges or inspires them are invited to express their interest and to choose the play they would like to approach through their own artistic lens.
The aim is not to reproduce the first presentation. On the contrary, the call seeks a different reception of the same text: a new directorial reading, a different interpretive proposal, an encounter between theatrical language and music, movement, the body, sound, image or other forms of contemporary performance-making.
This, after all, lies at the heart of MONOLOGUING: the meeting of the written text with oral delivery, of the author with the performer, of the directorial proposal with the spectator's imagination; the possibility that even a solitary voice can become collective.
EOS – Theatre in Akrata
The second phase of the project will take place in Akrata on 8 and 9 May 2027, after Easter, as part of EOS – Theatre in Akrata. It will bring the new approaches to the plays to the place that lies at the very historical and symbolic core of the Golfo Festival.
Why Akrata
It was here, in the late nineteenth century, that Spyridon Peresiadis was not only a writer but also an active figure in the town's theatrical and artistic life. He led the way in amateur theatre-making at a time when theatre could be born out of the community itself, far from the major urban and professional centres.
In 1887 he founded the Cultural Association ΗΩ in Akrata. It was in the same town that Golfo was written in 1893 and first performed, before moving a year later to the professional stage in Athens and continuing its successful journey on stages across Greece to this day.
More than a century later, the Golfo Festival seeks to reactivate this relationship between place, community and theatrical creation: not by reproducing the past, but by creatively continuing an idea already present in Peresiadis's path, that theatre can be born anywhere there is a text, a person willing to give it voice, and a community willing to listen.
EOS – Theatre in Akrata thus aspires to be not only a series of performances but a space for meeting, exchange and creative continuity. It seeks to build bridges between professional and amateur creation, between different generations and artistic languages, and between the first presentation of a play and the multiple lives it can acquire in the hands of other artists.
The seven plays of this first gathering open a broad field of themes and theatrical possibilities, from myth and history to personal testimony, confinement, difference and collective memory.
